Victoria Renee draws from her interdisciplinary experience in psychology, screenwriting, and filmmaking to create an anthology of four TV pilots that explore how Black women mask and code-switch between their authentic selves and who they present to the world. This collection of teleplays, coupled with reflections on their development, offers emerging storytellers, television enthusiasts, and lovers of unapologetic Black culture a glimpse into the ups and downs of a rising writer.

The Pilots:

• Sophisticated Ratchets - An Atlanta comedy following Karma Jones, a twenty-something engineering graduate determined to find her own path to success without sacrificing her fun-loving, unapologetically ratchet side.

• Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity (NGBRI) - A psychological drama with supernatural elements, following forensic psychiatry fellow Nia Harris, M.D., as she navigates high-stakes criminal cases, workplace competition, and personal turmoil while possessing a gift that allows her to see what haunts her patients.

• By the Code - A crime drama about Afro-Latina college freshman Amirah Martin, whose ambitions at Columbia University collide with family loyalty and the violent power struggle surrounding her uncle’s murder in the Bronx.

• Highly Inappropriate - An Atlanta family dramedy about psychologist Candice Campbellton, Ph.D., who must trade her fun-auntie lifestyle for parenthood after the death of her best friend, helping two grieving teenagers adjust to a life far removed from their own.

The Black Switch combines fiction, memoir, and screenwriting craft to create a space where Black women can unmask themselves, remove their super strong Black women capes, bask in their brilliance, and seek refuge in their resilience.
